Project Update - 1/19/2021

Phase 1 (south of bike path) Irrigation
Permanent irrigation equipment has been installed and winterized and is ready for start-up and irrigation in Spring 2021.  The temporary pumping equipment and the mobile generator have been removed from the site, and only the temporary white PVC surface irrigation lines just northwest of the Cottonwood Grove will remain for use in spring.  Permanent electrical service to the irrigation pump station has been completed and is ready for Spring 2021 watering.

Phase 2 (north of bike path) Irrigation

All piping and associated controls have been completed and are ready for start-up and irrigation in Spring 2021.  Due to the use of unique trenching equipment, the underground piping installation caused minimal disturbances.  Slight disturbances may be noticed around buried sprinkler heads and valve boxes, but should quickly disappear as seed germinates in the warmer months ahead.
Once the grass seed has germinated sufficiently to sustain foot traffic and activities across the restored areas of Community Park, the Park District will perform the first mowing in Spring 2021.  After the first mowing, the chain-link and temporary construction fencing will be removed.  At that time, minimal areas may need touch-up grading and seeding, but should not impact use of the playfield areas.

Detention Facility (Community Park) and Associated Storm Sewers

The underground stormwater detention facility installed in Community Park, and the storm sewer additions along Wilmette Avenue, the Meadow Drives, and Wilshire Avenues were completed and put into service last August 2020.  Additional storm sewer work is scheduled to start after school is out for the summer. The work is expected to commence early June 2021 and continue through late August.  Road closures and detours can be anticipated for the work in the intersection of Illinois and Hunter Roads, as well as along Washington Avenue east of Hunter Road.  Advance notification of these closures and detours will be provided in advance of construction.

Project Update - 10/16/2020

Phase 1 (south of bike path) Irrigation
Installation work has been completed, and restoration of the landscape is underway. All areas have been graded, seeded, fertilized, and covered in hydro-mulch. Temporary pumping equipment, powered by a temporary mobile generator, will provide irrigation until the permanent system is up and running in November. Irrigation is expected to begin as early as this weekend. To promote germination as quickly as possible, daily irrigation will take place during daylight hours, unless sufficient precipitation occurs.

Phase 2 (north of bike path) Irrigation
Installation work will begin early next week. The Contractor will begin with irrigation main piping immediately north of the bike path and work from the west, progressing toward the irrigation pump station.  Once this main is installed, the Contractor will begin irrigation main installations around the perimeter of the east half of the park’s north field.  Construction access for remaining irrigation work will be through Birchwood Lane.  The irrigation work is expected to be completed in late November.

Once the grass seed has germinated sufficiently to sustain foot traffic and activities across the restored areas of Community Park, the Park District will perform the first mowing in Spring 2021.  After this time, the chain-link and temporary construction fencing will be removed.

With the completion of the Highcrest School sign, the Contractor will replace several sections of sidewalk in front of the school on Saturday.  Early next week, final sod and plantings will be placed as well.

Project Update - 10/9/2020

Irrigation installations continue to progress through Community Park.  Phase 1 irrigation work, located south of the bike path, has been completed. The trenches are backfilled, raked, and ready for seeding and hydro-mulch. Phase 2 irrigation work, located north of the bike path, will commence this next week, starting with the east portion of the north field.

Final grading and seeding have been completed over the playfields south of the bike path, as well as the southern limits of the park behind Meadow Drive.  Fertilizing and hydro-mulching operations in these areas will be completed early next week.

Following hydro-mulching, temporary irrigation pumps will be installed to nurture the newly seeded and mulched playfields south of the bike path.

The Contractor will proceed later next week to work their way out of the Park by grading, seeding, and hydro-mulching the access driveway along the south side of the chain-link fencing.  Access for the Phase 2 irrigation work north of the bike path will continue through the west end of Birchwood Lane through late November.

April 2020

Project Update - 4/24/2020

Community Park Vault Improvements

Work Completed this Week: Monday, 04/20/2020 to Friday, 04/24/2020

Berger Excavating Contractor’s (Berger) completed the subgrade excavation and placement of stone for the temporary construction access driveway into Community Park. A granular parking area was also constructed inside the chain-link construction fencing to provide parking for workers. On Monday, a drill rig installed wood poles to provide locations for site security lighting fixtures to be mounted. Tuesday evening, the lights provided their first gentle glow around the perimeter of Community Park. A site security camera was also installed to watch over the site and record a time-lapse video of the activities on site. A link to the camera will be posted under Resources when available. Berger started stripping and stockpiling topsoil from the south and east areas of the Park where the first excavation will occur for the vault installation. Berger will prepare and seed the berm to prevent wind and rain erosion. This will be the standard practice as excavated materials are stockpiled along the perimeter of the construction site limits. The perimeter silt fence already installed will keep the excavated materials on the construction site, and ensure residents will not find spoils migrating into their yards. Various miscellaneous activities related to structure layout and pre-excavation planning will continue for the next few weeks.

Work Scheduled for Next Week: Monday, 04/27/20 through Friday, 05/01/20

Topsoil stripping activities within the Park will continue, with the primary focus on preparing the site for full access. Berger will also begin preparing the site to receive wood mats to construct a temporary roadway within the fenced work zone for construction material delivery trucks. Once installed, the wood mat roadway through the Park will reduce transfer of mud from the site to semi-trucks delivering and hauling materials to and from the site. Once the full access phase begins, portions of existing curbs and islands in the Highcrest School parking lot will be removed to construct the main access into the Park. Residents will likely see several parking light standards temporarily removed, as well as the existing Highcrest School sign along Hunter Road slated to be replaced with a new sign prior to the start of the 2020-2021 school year.

Traffic Expectations

No road closures are expected due to the work within Community Park.  Residents can expect relatively light to medium construction traffic entering and leaving the intersection of the Highcrest School parking lot and Hunter Road as equipment and loads of granular materials are delivered to the site.

Work Schedule

Anticipated work hours for next week are 7:00am to 6:00pm, Monday through Friday.

Storm Sewer Improvements
Work Completed This Week:  Monday, 04/20/2020 to Friday, 04/24/2020
On Monday, April 20th, Berger erected the staged traffic detour along Wilmette Avenue and Wilshire Drive. Flushing and videotaping operations of existing storm sewers along Wilmette Avenue, Wilshire Drive, Meadow Drive, Hunter Road, and Washington Avenue were completed. Additional surveying and layout activities were performed to facilitate the upcoming storm sewer work. The work site is getting prepared to receive several deliveries of 60-inch diameter storm sewer pipe sections, manholes, and structures.

Work Scheduled for Next Week:  Monday, 04/27/20 through Friday, 05/01/20
Starting Monday, April 27th, Berger will begin sawcutting operations in the intersection of Wilmette Avenue and Wilshire Drive. Construction of the new water main connection in this intersection will be followed by installation of the new water main down the west side lane of Wilshire Drive. Layout work and possible exploratory excavations to confirm existing conditions along the storm sewer route can be expected along Wilmette Avenue. Residents along Wilshire Drive will receive a hand-delivered notice Friday of the upcoming water main work and can expect a friendly reminder visit from one of the Team Members prior to their temporary driveway closure as the storm sewer installation passes by their residence. Berger will ensure that any disruption to resident access is as limited as possible and that access is reinstated at the end of each work day.

Traffic Expectations
Wilmette Avenue between Locust Road and Glenview Road will be closed between April 20th and late June 2020. The intersection of Wilmette Avenue and Wilshire Drive will be closed starting April 27th, followed immediately by work along Wilshire Drive. Residents are asked to exit the area via Glenview Road. Berger will continue delivering construction equipment needed to start stripping topsoil in the Park later in the week.  After some topsoil has been removed, Berger will begin installation of a granular roadway within the work zone to facilitate truck traffic for delivery of granular materials and precast concrete StormTrap sections.  Additional preparation for StormTrap deliveries and installation may occur late in the week, with the start of excavation in the south portion of the Park.  Lights and a camera will be installed to illuminate the perimeter of the fenced Park area to record progress and provide security of the site after dark.

Work Completed this Week: Monday, 04/13/2020 to Friday, 04/17/2020

Berger performed general utility location along Wilmette Avenue and staged traffic detour signage along Wilmette Avenue and Wilshire Drive. Flushing and videotaping operations of existing storm sewers along Wilmette Avenue, Wilshire Drive, Meadow Drive, Hunter Road, and Washington Avenue began and will continue until completion of the videotaping this Saturday.  Trees in close proximity to the construction work were protected this week with temporary construction fencing under the supervision of the Village’s Forestry Department.

Work Scheduled for Next Week: Monday, 04/20/2020 to Friday, 04/24/2020

On Monday, April 20th, Berger will erect the staged construction detour signage at the intersections of Wilmette Avenue and Locust Road, Wilshire Drive, and Glenview Road.  Construction equipment will be delivered to the closed section of Wilmette Avenue early in the week, followed by pavement and curb saw-cutting operations in preparation for new storm sewer installations later in the week.   New 60-inch storm sewer installation will begin in the intersection of Wilmette Avenue and Wilshire Drive, and progress east toward West Meadow Drive.  Various exploratory excavations along the storm sewer route will be performed to determine exact locations for manhole structures and confirm alignment of the sewer.  As work progresses, Residents will receive independent advance notice of driveway access limitations.  The Contractor will ensure that any disruption to resident access is as limited as possible and that access is reinstated at the end of each work day.

Traffic Expectations

Wilmette Avenue between Locust Road and Glenview Road will be closed starting April 20th through late June 2020.  Intersections of Wilmette Avenue and Wilshire and West Meadow Drives will be affected by the storm sewer work.  The Contractor will have flaggers when work is within the intersection, and signage will clearly mark the detours.  Residents can expect relatively light to medium construction traffic this week entering and leaving the closed portion of Wilmette Avenue at Locust and Glenview Roads as excavation equipment, loads of granular materials and excavated spoils, and pipe and manhole structures are delivered to and from the construction site.

Work Schedule

Storm sewer videotaping may occur on Saturday, April 18th along some portions of Wilmette Avenue, Wilshire Drive, Meadow Drive, Hunter Road, and Washington Avenue. This will only involve a small pick-up truck and localized lane closures with traffic cones. Anticipated work hours for next week are 7:00am to 6:00pm, Monday through Friday.
